No More “Get Out of Jail Free” Cards

I commend Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno and Senate Republicans for legislation they announced today which will strengthen the State’s parole laws to help restrict the release of potentially dangerous felons. This legislation is in response to the release of A-1 violent felons at an alarming rate since Governor Spitzer took office. I have sponsored similar legislation that would ensure fairness in the system while keeping vicious killers where they belong – behind bars.

Part of the administration’s argument for its actions is the recidivism rate among murderers is very low. Which means a killer’s likelihood to commit another crime has gone down. But that’s because fewer murderers were being released during the Pataki administration.

The last thing the state should be doing is giving “get out of jail free” cards to heinous killers and other violent felons. You don’t make nice with killers; you lock them up and throw away the key.

Since the majority of the members of the Parole Board are Republicans appointed by Pataki, why don't you ask your fellow Republicans to quit.
